A Bed In

Upholstered beds have long been out of reach for Pointy Shoes & Broken Thumbs. The price of their favorite bed, by bludot, was beyond their financial means and upon sampling the bed at a local furniture store, some months ago, it also looked beyond their DIY means.

Broken Thumbs & Pointy Shoes had always believed themselves to be grand furniture makers and this delusion had held Pointy Shoes & Broken Thumbs captive for a very long time, so much so that Broken Thumbs had been slowly building up his wood working and upholstery skills up to task over the past few years imagining that sometime soon he would be able to build what they could not afford.

What is a bed really? Pointy Shoes & Broken Thumbs would have an answer to this question after staying at the Ace Hotel and inspecting their plywood bed. A bed is a box that supports a mattress and if you’re lucky you get a headboard to put your back up against and read comfortably before settling down for the night. Pointy Shoes & Broken Thumbs’ current bed fulfilled neither of these two functions. The mattress they slept on floated precariously over the floor, supported by scant few pieces of wood and their headboard was dangerous to lean against. The horrible sounds their current bed made gave them little confidence in its longevity so with the restyling of the new bedroom to match the Ace Hotel, Pointy Shoes & Broken Thumbs decided it would be a good idea to also build a matching bed.

A plywood box, while functional, is not the most comfortable thing to stub your toe on, as Pointy Shoes often does, so Broken Thumbs upholstered this box with high density foam and wool felt similar in design to the bed he found at the Ace while also taking some styling cues from the bludot bed Pointy Shoes & Broken Thumbs lusted after so long ago.

Since Pointy Shoes & Broken Thumbs were sacrificing bedroom space by moving into the smaller bedroom, they needed a bit of extra storage. The bed was fitted with four cubby holes with soft close drawers (coming soon) to accommodate what extra wardrobe would not fit in their now smaller closet.

Keeping with the Ace Hotel inspiration, Pointy Shoes created a denim headboard after cannibalizing our ratty hand-me-down sofa. Unfortunately Pointy Shoes could not make the headboard much wider than the bed because it would impede the closet door and night stand in a room where space is at a premium.

Sorry we can’t afford $850 sconces.
